Summer is sizzling... Or is it crackling?

P1370

The first time I tried Sally Hansen's crackle polish was botched. It appeared as if a five year old had poorly painted my nails. I had uses no base or top coats and applied OCC Makeup nail polish. The effect was disastrous.

The second time I used Gold Antique, it was over a Sally Hansen base coat and an OPI polish. It applied much better, and the effect looks nice.

Mineral makeup

Technically all makeup is mineral makeup. Mica is a mineral powder that is used to create color. When people are searching for "mineral makeup," they mean to say they want silicone free products.

Companies such as Mary Kay market their products as mineral makeup, but their mineral eyeshadows contain a lot of non minerals and silicone derivatives. Products such as these are not purely "mineral makeup," and advertising is misleading.

As a former independent beauty consultant, I learned that many people who sell Mary Kay and Avon are not artists and have no idea how to apply makeup. Makeup is an art. Independent beauty consultants for like lines attend trainings and workshops on product knowledge. There are basic application techniques, but only real professionals can show one how to maximize product use.

Pure minerals need additives for ease of product use. Many mineral products are faint and do not show well in photos. MAC Cosmetics Mineralize has decent coverage and color. The Orlando Makeup Junkie is recognized by http://www.AfterglowCosmetics.com but has not had an opportunity to review the products.

When searching for the right "mineral" makeup, consider why exactly you prefer mineral makeup.

If you would like to try Afterglow Cosmetics, schedule an appointment with the Orlando Makeup Junkie.

Baby Blue and Electric Blue are bright, fun colors. NYX is a great product for beginners. It is not clumsy but is very easy to use. Remember to set everything with powder!

NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil

P1218

I think this was Brown or Herra. The NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil surprised me. I did not think the depth of color could compete with MAC Cosmetics, but it produced this vibrant pink.

NYC Jumbo Lip Pencil is great for people on the go - a lot of color in a little stick. throw these in your bag, and they take less space than tuned lipstick. It is a good product for a minimalist.

Pink Paradise lashes would enhance this look. Purchase your air from http://store.got-lashes.com

Purple is unconventional and unique

National Purple Day occurs yearly and is similar to wearing pink for breast cancer awareness.  Purple is for epilepsy.  Did you remember to wear purple on National Purple Day? If not, you can prepare for next time with some pretty purple colors.

This look was created with Lime Crime Makeup and Got-Lashes False Eyelashes.  Empress was added to both outer corners of the top lid.  Citrus Girl was dabbed in the center of the top lid and used as liner on the lower lid.  Twilight was used in the crease.  Face was prepped with moisturizer and Studio Fix Foundation Powder was used on the face and as concealer.  Azalea was used to add a pop of pink on the cheekbones.  Airborne Unicorn was used to bring the look together, but we cannot forget the lovely purple false eyelashes.  No eyeliner was used.

This look is conservative enough for Orlando in a dramatic, date way.  It can be worn across town, at local parks, or even to the mall.  Purple is a fun, high fashion type of color that can only be done justice by creative makeup artists in Orlando.  It is not quite a trend in Orlando yet, but perhaps that is because we do not carry highly pigmented cosmetics or fun colors such as those by Lime Crime.  Lime Crime is not available in Orlando, but Mac Cosmetics is at some major department stores, at the Florida Mall, and at Mall at Millenia.

Bella Sugar - sweetness for your eyes

Using Bella Sugar Cosmetics, this spring look was inspired by Orlando, flowers, and flamingos. OMG is reminiscent of the bright pink of one of Florida's most loved birds. Yell-Oh is bright like fresh pollen on a warm, breezy spring day in Orlando. Hunter Orange tied the Yell-Oh and OMG together and added extra shimmer that conjures images of a mist leftover from last night's storm. The warmth of Dessert Rose brought an earth tone to complete the look.

Prep:

  • moisturizer: Neutragena
  • primer: none
  • concealer: MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer in NC20
  • foundation: MAC Prolongwear Concealer in NC20
  • powder: generic loose powder
  • lip conditioner: MAC Lip Conditioner

 Eyes:

  • Shadows: Yell-Oh was patted onto the inner quarters of both upper and lower lids to create the pollen effect. Hunter Orange covered the rest of the upper lid to the crease. OMG was blended into the crease and softened above to fade before the brow bone. Dessert Rose was used in the lower lid for shimmery definition.
  • Eyeliner: Black pencil eyeliner (winged out on upper and lower with a space between the lines)
  • Mascara: none

Cheeks:

  • Blush: MAC Powder Blush in Style
  • Bronzer: none
  • Highlighter: none

 Lips:

  • Liner: none
  • Lipstick: generic orange
  • Gloss: none

This look is fun, easy to recreate, beautiful to wear, and great for Orlandoans. Wear this look to work, school, or a night out on the Church Street. Loose vs. Pressed Powders

Clients ask if I prefer, as a freelance makeup artist in Orlando, loose or pressed powders. Personally, I prefer loose. I spent an entire day crushing my pressed powders to make them loose. The advantage of loose powder, for me, is flexibility and control. I can get more pigment on my brush with a mere dip, and I can control how much I want. The downside is fallout and messes. Another advantage I have by using loose powders is using them as pigments in fluids, such as foundations and airbrush makeup, to create custom colors and special effects. If not mixed properly, the fluids may have powdery after effects that are messy. I enjoy creating custom colors to match my mood. Most often I prefer bright, bold colors such as lime, lemon, aqua, and raspberry. Sometimes it is difficult to find such airbrush colors or lipsticks. Matte shadows usually lack slip, making it quite a task to grab on the brush or mix. Crushing the color makes it more versatile. Pigments and powders can intensify lipsticks and emollient products as well as make them less likely to "run." If mixing with fluids, mix well to avoid the powder settling at the bottom under the fluid.

For beginners and non artisans, I recommend pressed powder. It is less messy.

NSFW @OCCMAKEUP Lip Tar

Photo

See how bold and sassy this Lip Tar is? A tiny half bead covered all of both lips with leftovers. The color went on smoothly and had a glossy glow that contributed to the fullness of the lips. The face was prepped with typical eye cream and moisturizer. OCC Foundation in Y3 was sprayed very lightly. The OCC site says only six to eight drops are needed, but it took twenty to fully cover my face. I find that even Dinair, Temptu Pro, and MAC also require 15-20 drops. Amount of drops also depend on how much space there is to cover, how much coverage is needed, and desired effect. If darker colors are used, less product may be needed. OCC was best applied on the lowest setting of my Dinair Mini Compressor. OCC is very thin, so it requires minimal low air pressure. It feels like a cool mist just as Dinair does. Three drops of Hush gave a healthy, sun flushed glow against tan skin. Bronze was used to contour the cheeks. Hush was also sprayed on both top eyelids. It was then set with a light, sparkling pink Urban Decay eyeshadow. Mushroom was used with a pencil brush in the crease. Perversion powder shadow lined the top lids. More photos to follow.
